Hatha Yoga is about balancing the body and mind. ‘Ha’ represents the esoteric sun and ‘tha’ the moon. The practice of Hatha yoga aims to join, yoke, or balance these two energies.
Hatha means ‘force’ and is commonly known as ‘the yoga of force’, or ‘the means of attaining a state of yoga through force. It is the mastery of the body as a way of attaining a state of spiritual perfection in which the mind is withdrawn from external objects.
STRUCTURE OF HATHA YOGA
Hatha Yoga is referred as six-limbed yoga (Shatanga Yoga). The limbs are explained below
Asana – steady comfortable posture of mind and body
Pranayama – Attaining steady pace and expanding Prana
Pratyahara – retracting physical attachment from the surroundings
Dharana – Focusing mind on a single thought/ emotion
Dhyana – Observing the innerself
Samadhi – Attaining the highest point, forgetting everything around - relaxing mind and body
The first two limbs of Raja Yoga – Yamas & Niyamas are excluded in Hatha Yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga is an eight-limbed path toward achieving the state of union. It is defined in the ancient text Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, compiled by Sage Patañjali around 200 CE. The Yoga Sutras consist of 196 short statements, divided into four books, explaining the theory and practice of Yoga. The ultimate goal of Yoga is to still the mind and experience unity with the Universal Mind.
The eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga are:
Yama: non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing
Niyama: Self cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study, and surrender to the Divine.
Asana: Meditative and physical postures
Pranayama: Practicing breathing as key element which is the reason of life.
Pratyahara: Removing the external distractions to realizing innerself.
Dharana: focusing our thoughts/emotions on a single focus point, concentration.
Dhyana: Uninterrupted meditation by chant or by reciting a particular verse .
Samadhi: A state of super-conscious trance where we connect ourselves to the outer larger space.
Ashtanga Yoga is mostly adapted for its orderly practice and suitable for all age groups.
Vinyasa Yoga is a combination of Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga. This style of Yoga is most commonly used from Interrmediate to Advanced Yoga seekers, as it needs to correct the posture, hold the posture for some time.
Vinyasa Yoga not only corrects the posture of an asana but strengthens the body muscles to comfortably hold the position for more than 20-30 minutes. The ability to hold a proper posture for lengthy duration strengthens joints, muscles, and tissues, promoting proper circulation of blood, and prana (life energy). This Yoga is also recommended for young generation yoga aspirants who wish to compete in District State.
